Mildred J. “Millie” Underwood, 90, St. Joseph, Missouri died Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Living Community of St. Joseph.
Mrs. Underwood was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph. She graduated from Lafayette High School in 1939 and was a member of the National Honor Society.
Mrs. Underwood was a secretary and had been employed at the former Douglas Candy Company for six years, at Hillyard Chemical Company for 35 years, taking early retirement in 1980. She then worked part-time at Glaze Construction Management for eight years.
She was a member of Wyatt Park Christian Church, a charter member and first president of Joseph Robidoux Questers Chapter No. 1029, a charter member of the Pony Express Chapter American Business Women’s Association, a member of Radiant Chapter #88, Order of Eastern Star, the Saint Joseph Historical Society, Pony Express Historical Association, St. Joseph Christian Women’s Club, the Runcie Club, the St. Joseph Garden Club and the Sodance Club.
On May 19, 1945, she married John Harold “Doug” Underwood. He died November 1, 1999. She also was preceded in death by her parents, Traber and Selma Adams Purchase, and a sister, Helen Purchase. Numerous cousins survive her.
Services: 3:00 P.M. Saturday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment Ashland Cemetery. The Family will receive friends 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. Saturday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory, where friends may call after 8:00 A.M. Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the Family suggests memorial contributions to be made to the Wyatt Park Christian Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
