Alice K. Phelan

1926-2012

Alice K. Phelan, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri died peacefully at her home on Saturday, November 17, 2012.

She was born on February 19, 1926 to William J. and Elizabeth F. (Dunnigan) Phelan in Kansas City, Missouri. She graduated from Convent of the Sacred Heart High School in St. Joseph in 1943 and from the College of St. Mary in Leavenworth, Kansas where she received a BS degree in Math in 1947.

Living with her sister Elizabeth Phelan in St. Joseph, Alice worked as a Senior Vice President of Fletcher Mayo Associates advertising firm for sixteen years. During those years she managed their offices in San Francisco, Kansas City, Atlanta and Chicago. Truly she was a female executive in days when female executives were scarce. After retiring in 1986, Alice pursued a lifelong love of travel. She enjoyed many voyages abroad. Her favorite destinations included India, Asia and safaris in Africa.

She cherished happy times with family, friends and business associates. She was also a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where she formerly served as a Eucharistic Minister.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Elizabeth; cousin, Jean Newman; and her beloved Sheltie, Megan.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews all from the Kansas City area.

Services:  10:00 A.M. Wednesday, Horigan Chapel, Mount Olivet Cemetery. Interment Mount Olivet Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Horigan Chapel. The family suggests memorial gifts to a pet charity of your choice.

Messages of Condolence

It was a very moving and memorable experience to be at Alice’s side during the last chapter of her life. I enjoyed our conversations and learning about her she was truely unique. We spent hours talking about iconic locations of old St.Joe, she said she loved the dances at the Frog Hop ballroom and never missed the opprotunity to dance when asked. I learned that Alice was a devout Catholic, we prayed the Hail Mary together. Alice so loved her dogs I too love dogs. My time with Alice will remain with me for my entire life,
