10. Question: Why do I have to use a vault? Is it required by law?
Answer: Missouri State law does not require a vault or outer burial container. However, many modern cemeteries require an outer burial container or vault to prevent the ground from collapsing protecting the integrity of the grave.
11. Question: Do you have a veterans section and what benefits are we entitled to? (Before The Time Of Need and At The Time Of Need)
Answer: St. Joseph Memorial Park and Mt. Auburn locations do provided cemetery property to veterans and their spouses. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces and veterans honorably discharged from military service are eligible for burial. Veterans are also entitled to a government-provided memorial marker. Your Memorial Counselor can assist you in making arrangements for a Veteran.
12. Question: We have a family member buried at St. Joseph Memorial Park or Mt. Auburn cemetery. Can we just open that space and put this person’s cremated remains at the foot of that grave?
Answer: At St. Joseph Memorial Park or Mt. Auburn Cemeteries we offer the option for a second burial of cremated remains on most of the existing graves. In these cases rather than purchasing an additional grave, a Second Right of Interment fee is charged at half of the current price of the grave in that particular section. Grave opening charges for cremated remains are reduced as well. Not all graves can accommodate a Second Right of Interment, so it is advised to discuss this option with one of our Family Care Specialists in advance.
13. Question: Can cremated remains be placed in ground property?
Answer: Yes, cremated remains may be placed in a regular ground interment space inside a cremation vault. There are also options for above ground placement in a mausoleum crypt or glass front niche.
14. Question: Do you scatter in the ground? (Or do you have a “scattering garden”?).
Answer: Neither St. Joseph Memorial Park nor Mt. Auburn cemeteries currently have “scattering gardens” and prohibits the scattering of cremated remains on our premises. What we do have is an Ossuary that is similar to scattering. An Ossuary is a communal container designed to hold the cremated remains of multiple individuals.
15. Question: My relative is interred there and we need a memorial marker. How much are they?
Answer: The price of a Memorial Marker will depend on the type of cemetery property and type of Memorial that you select. Please contact us at (816) 232-5276 for the current price of a Memorial Marker for your specific cemetery property.
16. Question: What is the setting fee for a memorial marker?
Answer: The setting fee of a Memorial Marker will depend on the type of cemetery property and the size of the marker. There are two types of fees that apply to markers. The first is the cemetery setting fee which covers the cost of preparing the ground, setting and leveling the marker and recording the placement of the marker in our permanent file. The second fee is the Endowed Care Fund contribution that is set forth by the State of Missouri to provide on-going care for the marker. Please contact us at (816) 232-5276 for the current setting fee for your order.
17. Question: What type of Memorial Marker does St. Joseph Memorial Park/Mt. Auburn allow?
Answer: Please contact us at (816) 232-5276 to order a Memorial Marker and to obtain the specifications for your location.
18. Question: Can I get a memorial marker somewhere else?
Answer: Yes, but it must meet St. Joseph Memorial Park/Mt. Auburn specifications. Please contact us at (816) 232-5276 to obtain the required specifications for a memorial marker on your interment property. Your marker company will need to deliver your marker to your desired cemetery. Setting fees and Endowed Care Fund contributions apply no matter where you purchase your marker.
19. Question: How long before the memorial tablet is placed?
Answer: It takes approximately 6-10 weeks after the final approval has been received, the placement fee paid, and manufacturing is completed before a Memorial Marker is placed. Special emblems, designs, and sketches may take longer. A temporary grave marker will be placed for 30 days following the interment.
20. Question: How can I make arrangements for my spouse and myself beforehand?
Answer: Simply contact us at (816) 232-3366 or toll free at (800) 366-6203. Our staff will make arrangements for you to meet with one of our representatives to pre-plan your arrangements.
21. Question: Our relative passed away and we want to send him/her to another state or country. Do you do that? How much does it cost? How do we arrange it?

22. Question: Our relative owns property at one of your parks, but lives in another state. How do we get them to you for burial?

Auburn cemetery for funeral services and burial.
