Obituary for Betty F. McQueen

Betty F. McQueen, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2018.
She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Grace and George White.
Betty married at a young age to James A. Johnston. This marriage produced four sons, John, Jerry, Danny and Kenny.
While in the military they stayed in Italy, Germany and Greece. Betty studied horsemanship, jumping and dressage in each country, then they returned to the U.S. After her husband retired as Lt. Col. they ran a stable in Shreveport then moved to Montgomery, Alabama and ran another stable. Betty was teaching jumping at this time. They had 125 students a month. She and her husband, James divorced and she moved back to St. Joseph, Missouri.
Walter and Betty began seeing each other in July of 1963 and by 1970 they were raising and showing horses, always with their dogs around.
Betty retired from Boehringer Animal Health in 1993, but before that she worked with her mother at White Snack Bar, which was later sold and named The Dinky Diner.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and grandson, Colin Johnston.
Survivors include husband, Walter McQueen; sons, John, Jerry, Danny and Kenny (Barb) Johnston; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and sister, Jean Bruener.
Farewell Services 10:00 A.M. Monday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will gather with friends 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the St. Joseph Animal Shelter or charity of the donor’s choice. Online guest book and obituary at
