Obituary for George "Spud" Miller

George “Spud” Miller
1925-2017

George (Spud) Miller died peacefully Sunday evening, November 19, 2017. He was 92 years old. George was the youngest of six children born to Dave and Theresa (Walter) Miller.
The Miller family was raised east of Conception Abbey, Missouri. George shared stories of horse and buggy rides to the Abbey, walking to Wildcat School and he talked of the emphasis growing up placed on family values. He often referenced Sunday picnic gatherings with cousins at his maternal grandparents’ home.
The family relocated to Lewistown, Montana in 1946. There they welcomed many a relative traveling through or coming to work for a season; always ‘room at the table for one more’.
George served in the military during the Korean conflict. After his term of service was completed, he took advantage of the GI bill and graduated with a degree in Business Administration from the University of Montana. He spent many years employed in hospital accounting. He was a devout Catholic, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and contributed many hours of voluntary financial assistance to the parishes he attended. He made sure to introduce all his nieces and nephews to a ‘love of the great outdoors’ and set an example of ‘love of adventure’ with travel throughout South America in 1957, before passable roads even existed! He became the family historian in his spare time.
As his parents aged, George took on total responsibility for their care. When his father died, Spud and his mother relocated to Puyallup, Washington to be near the family of his sister Amelia.
In his early 80’s, when his caregiving days were complete, Spud entertained the idea of moving back to MO to be among his many cousins living near Maryville. There he reconnected again with his family heritage and continued his interest in the family genealogy.
George was lovingly cared for at Missouri Veterans’ Home Cameron for the final five and a half years of his life. He is survived by nine nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. Those who knew George will remember him as a compassionate man of great faith; a man who loved the Lord and had a heart to serve.
