Obituary for Janice M. "Jan" Saxton

Janice M. “Jan” Saxton

Janice M. “Jan” Saxton, 92, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2018, at Carriage Square, St. Joseph.
She was born September 9, 1925, to Irvin Edward and Caroline Ruth (Weller) Patterson in Maitland, Missouri. Jan graduated from Lafayette High School in 1943 and was voted Most Popular Girl as well as Basketball Queen.
She married Guy Dale Saxton October 30, 1946. He preceded her in death January 12, 2010.
A member of the “Great Generation,” Jan’s extraordinary life of providing family enrichment, sharing a spirit for volunteerism, and embarking on global travel has its roots in the Great Depression. Born in the 1920s, Jan moved with her family to Rapid City, South Dakota, during a time that marked the beginning of a dream that would change her life, and her community – the dream of offering miniature golf to the community as a source of family togetherness and entertainment.
After pursuing a number of different opportunities, and enduring the financial challenges of the period, Jan’s family returned to St. Joseph where they eventually founded a small miniature golf course at 9th and Jules. Jan, a new graduate of Lafayette High School, took over management of the business. The business was much more to her than an occupation; it became a way of life, and a way to express her passion for people. Together, Jan and Guy opened Cool Crest Garden Golf, Inc., on July 4, 1948.
Jan was a member of Huffman Memorial United Methodist Church for 58 years and a member of PEO Chapter HY for more than 50 years. She and Guy were married for over 63 years and were both active in the St. Joseph community.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Kingsley Patterson.
Survivors include her children, Anita Meehan, Greg Saxton, and Dr. Janeane Saxton, DC (Vicki Schnurr); grandchildren, Jennifer Meehan Frost (Geoffrey), Alyssa Saxton Stenberg (Jason), Darby Meehan (Jenny), and Michael Schnurr (Morgan); great-grandchildren, Hunter Nickols, Kaylon, Ashlyn, and Whitney Frost, Isaac, Jeremiah, and Laura Stenberg, Kylee, Delaney, Kaitlin, Molly, and Donovan Meehan, Hadley and Charlie Schnurr; sister, Patricia Patterson-Tursi, PhD; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
