Obituary for John Adam Ross Jr.

John Adam Ross Jr.
1926-2017

John Adam Ross, Jr., 90, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away on October 26, 2017, at the Kansas City Veterans' Hospital.
He was born on December 19, 1926, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to John and Helen Ross. John graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph in 1944. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the occupation of Japan.
In 1947, John married Alice Parrott in St. Joseph. After his military service and attending the University of Missouri, he worked for many years for the St. Joseph Gazette as an award-winning reporter, city editor, and managing editor. Later, his career took him to Wichita, Kansas, where he used his writing and linguistic skills as creator and director of the Cessna Citation magazine, Directions.
His travels and his fluency in at least 8 languages took him around the world to 117 countries, both for business and pleasure. Along the way, he collected stories to share throughout his life. Upon retirement, he and Alice traveled for five years before settling in Chama, New Mexico, where John, an avid outdoorsman, pursued his lifelong passion for fly fishing.
John was a man of many talents and interests. Early in life, he trained show horses and became a licensed pilot, a licensed amateur radio operator, and an Eagle Scout leader. He was a skilled craftsman; his projects reflected his passion and pursuit of perfection. He produced custom hunting rifles, archery equipment, walking canes, knives, fly fishing rods, and fishing flies and lures. He also made many sets of wind chimes and a Celtic harp for Alice. Photography, painting, and stained glass were among his artistic endeavors. John's gourmet cooking was enjoyed by family and friends on many occasions. His sense of humor and his flair for storytelling were always a treat.
In March 2016, John and Alice returned to the Midwest. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in August 2017, surrounded by family in Kansas City.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; three children: Kathy, Mike (Vicki), and Lisa; sister, Jane (John); nine grandchildren; and a growing number of great-grandchildren.
The Farewell Services will be at 3:00 P.M. on Wednesday at Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. The family will gather one hour prior to the service. Online guest book and obituary at www.meierhoffer.com.
