Larry J. McDonald

Larry J. McDonald, 76, Platte City, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at his home.
He was born January 28, 1941, to Lewis Thurman and Nellie Louise (Carr) McDonald in St. Joseph, Missouri. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1959-1962. Larry graduated with an Associate Degree in Business Administration from Wichita State.
Larry married Jean Yarger June 25, 1960.
He was a salesman for most of his life and retired as a sales manager at Donegan Optical after 30 years. Larry was a member, deacon, and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church of Platte City. He was also a member of the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, a counselor of Celebrate Recovery, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and member of the American Legion Post #318 in Parkville, Missouri.
Larry was a passionate Mizzou fan and also loved the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs. He enjoyed traveling, dining out, reading, and gardening. Larry’s biggest mission was witnessing and counseling for Christ. He was dedicated to his walk with God and was a friend and mentor to all.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, Jim Backstrom.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jean; children, Kelly Miller-Backstrom, Waxahachie, Texas, Jeff McDonald (Errin), Platte City, Missouri, and David McDonald (Lynn), Sarcoxie, Missouri; grandchildren, Ashley Miller-Medina (Billy), Sean Miller, Ian McDonald, Kylee Julian, Jakob Costello, and Austin McDonald; great-grandchildren, Kyra Manuel, Luke Medina, Alyssa Medina, and Ariel Naverette; brother, Bob McDonald (Barbara), Katy, Texas; nephews, Robbie and Chris McDonald (Diane); great-nephews, Clay and Josh McDonald; sister-in-law, Janet Jones; and numerous cousins and extended family.
Farewell Services 1:00 P.M. Saturday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will gather with friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations made to the First Baptist Church of Platte City. Online guest book and obituary at
