Orrin Kenneth “Ken” Hamlin II

Orrin Kenneth “Ken” Hamlin II died peacefully in St. Joseph, Missouri, on January 4, 2018, surrounded by his family at the age of 71.
Ken married Sandra Wilson in Lawrence, Kansas, on January 27, 1967, at First Christian Church, St. Joseph.
Ken is survived by his wife; daughters, Melissa Koch (Vince) of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Heather Peterson (Denny) of Stockton, California; his granddaughters, Morgan Keating (Ben) of Brimfield, Massachusetts, Molly Koch, Sydney Peterson and Ellie Peterson; and his sister, Carolyn Koftan of Kansas City, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by parents and sister, Susan Meares.
Ken was born on August 1, 1946, in Coffeyville, Kansas, to Orrin Kenneth and Josephine (Hoppel) Hamlin. He graduated from Manhattan High School in Manhattan, Kansas, in 1964 and went on to attend Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, on a football scholarship.
A well-known insurance agent in St Joseph for more than 40 years, he gained friends as well as many clients.
Ken was actively involved in the community and loved bringing smiles to all his friends and family. He loved to sing with the church choir and was a Barber Shopper. He was a member of First Christian Church since moving to St. Joseph in 1970. Through the church, he and Sandra started and ran the Royal Family Kids Camp, which is an internationally recognized Christian camp for abused, neglected, and abandoned children, for 23 years.
Ken started his volunteer career to the delight of his two daughters as a homeroom dad at Lindbergh Elementary. Ken was later elected to the Avenue City School Board. He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Masonic Lodge #78. He was a well-decorated Rotarian, as a member of the East Side Rotary Club earning a Paul Harris Fellow three times. He was Club President twice and served numerous times on the board always lending his two cents. Through the Rotary Club, Ken participated in ringing bells for the Salvation Army, as well as the St. Joseph Youth Alliance, where he emceed fundraising trivia contests. InterServ was also an interest of Ken’s, and he became well known as their very own “Santa Claus” for the preschool Headstart programs. On many Thursdays, he would join in delivering Meals on Wheels. He supported many district projects and was considered a leader, a mentor, and a friend by all.
The visitation will be at Meierhoffer Funeral Home on Sunday, January 7, from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M., with the memorial service scheduled for Monday, January 8, at 10:00 A.M., at First Christian Church. All are welcome to attend to celebrate Ken’s life.
