Obituary for Richard M. Hill

Richard M. Hill

Richard Merlyn Hill, 84, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2017, in Columbia, Missouri surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He had resided at The Bluffs nursing care facility in Columbia for the past several years.
Richard was born in Logan, Iowa, on June 3, 1933, to Lester Warren Hill and Mabel Alice (Killpack) Hill. He grew up in Cameron, Missouri, and Stewartsville, Missouri, and graduated from Stewartsville High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. Following his service in the military, he was employed by Western Electric in Kansas City, Missouri.
He married Elaine Yvonne Schneider of Cosby, Missouri, on February 28, 1958, and they had four children together. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary shortly before Elaine’s death in 1998 in Columbia, Missouri.
Richard worked for Western Electric and AT&T for three decades before retiring in 1983. Richard started his career with Western Electric in Kansas City and later worked in western Kansas; Houston, Texas; Corpus Christy, Texas; St. Louis, Missouri; Cameron, Missouri; and finally again in Kansas City, Missouri. Following his retirement, he held several jobs including Farmers Insurance, Co., and Missouri Division of Social Services in Kansas City, the Pony Express Museum in St. Joseph, Missouri, and Walmart in Moberly, Missouri. Richard served as an Elder in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for many years. After Elaine’s death, Richard lived with his son, Don, in New York for a time and later moved to Moberly, Missouri, and then to Hallsville, Missouri.
Richard loved being active and enjoyed dancing, riding his bike, and going on hikes until he was 80 years old. Being around people, and especially children, brought him a special joy, and he loved telling others his many stories and jokes. Throughout his life, he loved history, animals, and reading. He especially loved learning new things and completed a bachelor’s degree in theology in his 40s. Richard also enjoyed nature photography and loved writing letters and sending his photos to his grandchildren.
He is survived by his brother, Robert Hill, of Kansas City, Missouri, and was preceded in death by his sister, Laverla Kistler of California, Missouri. He is also survived by his four children, Rick Hill (Joanne) of Sagle, Idaho; Anita Hoffman (Robert) of Indianapolis, Indiana; Kathy Ray (Dean) of Hallsville, Missouri; Don Hill (Cindy) of Honeoye Falls, New York; and his daughter-in-law, Margy Holyst of Honeoye Falls, New York. Richard is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and eleven grandchildren, Bryce Ray (Sarah), Sara Moss (Eli), Dana Umstead (Matt), Stephen Hoffman (Meaghan), Luke Hill (Becky), Paul Hill (Katherine), David Hoffman, Taylor Ray, Josh Hill, Kaiden Hill, Essence Hill, and three great-grandchildren, Carson Ray, Lorraine Ray, and Trenton Hill. He was also looking forward to the birth of a great-granddaughter, who will be joining the family of Luke and Becky Hill.
